Let's make this precious

"There's a widely held theory that children always rebel against their parents. So what do you do if your dad happens to be a contemporary of Andy Warhol and one of the most important avant-garde filmmakers of the 1960s? If you are Azazel Jacobs- whose father is abstract impressionist filmmaker Ken Jacobs- does rebellion mean turning to mainstream Hollywood fare? Hardly, if Jacobs Junior's feature length debut Nobody Needs To Know is anything to go by.

"My parents raised me and my sister Nisi in New York's Tribeca and we came of age surrounded by legendary and innovative artists," says Jacobs. "Our parents pre-occupations- and also those of their contemporaries- had a profound effect on our own philosophies and aesthetics."

All of which means that Nobody Needs To Know will definitely play to lovers of The Hulk or Charlie's Angels. So what is the film about? Over to Jacobs: "I felt that I could not tell a better story then Fellini, make a record better then the Clash or express myself with more clarity then Lenny Bruce. So I set out to combine these influences in the hopes that their meeting would spark something new. Coming from a family so uncompromising in its own avantgarde work, simply using professional actors was delving into testy waters."

Using a reggae dub soundtrack and B&W photography, Nobody Needs To Know is a love story to New York and its people, starring Norman Reedus and Tricia Vessey, mostly shot before the city lost two prominent buildings and innocence.

In fact, if you want to relive again the banality of that extraordinary day, check out Jacobs website and watch the extra-entitled Message Machine. No more complicated than a piece of footage of the Twin Towers in all their glistening, sun lit glory set against the soundtrack of the increasingly panic-stricken messages left on Jacobs answer phone that day, Message Machine is a brilliant example of how the avant-garde and experimental can still tell us something about the human experience that no amount of budget or special effects ever will.

Unconventional, challenging- and oh, did we mention that it's got some really hot young actors and actresses in it? Nobody Needs To Know reminds us that even in the current climate of the ever-more-expensive thrill, the avant-garde can still show the mainstream a trick or two." - SIMMY RICHMAN, I-D Magazine
